A psychiatrist is a physician specialized in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders. Psychiatrists have completed Medical School and specialized training in psychiatry. They are authorized to prescribe medications, conduct medical examinations, and use various therapeutic approaches, including pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.

A psychologist is a professional who has completed a degree in psychology. Psychologists deal with assessment, counseling, and the application of psychological tests, as well as psychological support. They do not prescribe medications or make medical diagnoses, but are crucial in mental health assessment, conducting psychological testing, and counseling.

A psychotherapist is a professional (psychologist, physician, or other related professions) who has completed additional education in psychotherapy. Psychotherapists conduct various forms of talk therapy (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, gestalt, etc.) with the aim of helping people overcome emotional or psychological difficulties. They do not prescribe medications unless they are also psychiatrists.

Understanding the difference helps patients choose the appropriate professional according to their needs – for example, if medication is needed, one should contact a psychiatrist, for psychological testing a psychologist, and for talk therapy a psychotherapist.
